Picture the scene – saying, ‘I Do’ surrounded by your favourite people and nothing but country resorts on the tuscan hills, luxurious villas in Lake Como, outstanding places on the Amalfi coast, endless sunshine and the promise of the sea as your backdrop. It’s easy to see why more and more people are opting to get wed abroad but don’t be fooled, destination weddings do come with a few challenges! The good news is that they are all easily avoidable. Here are our top tips for tying the knot abroad and the mistakes you need to know about…
Not knowing the legalities
While a destination wedding planner will be able to advise and support you on the legal side of things, you need to make sure you’re completely clued up. Take time to find out what the rules are for your marriage license in the country you’ve chosen to get married in and always do your research – we cannot stress the importance of this enough.
Not sending out your save the dates soon enough
When it comes to a destination wedding, your guests will require a lot more notice so make sure you send out your save the dates as early as possible. Your friends and family will need to book annual leave from work, organise accommodation and save money to attend. As luxury wedding planners in Italy, we advise our clients to send out save the dates no less than six months in advance, if not before. You may also want to set up a wedding website to let your guests know of local accommodation and essential information – they will hugely appreciate it, trust us.
Not researching the weather
Many couples choose a destination wedding for the weather – but you’re not always promised sunshine and blue skies. In Italy, we recommend tying the knot between May – October for prime weather but your planner will be able to advise on the specific area.
Planning too much for your guests to do
Your guests will have travelled far and wide to spend your celebration with you, but make sure you give them time to settle in and relax. If you’re getting married on a weekend, we recommend giving your guests at least a couple of days to unwind. It may be a good idea to plan a few fun excursions and activities for your loved ones to do during their time away but avoid cramming in too much.
Choosing the wrong location for your wedding
If you’ve always had your heart set on getting married abroad (particularly in Italy) it can be hard to know where to choose for your wedding venue, especially if you are not very familiar with the area. With so many stunning locations across the world, you are fortunately spoilt for choice. However, it is important to consider whether or not your potential venue is easily accessible, whether it works within your budget and will it be suitable for your friends and family? If you need a helping hand sourcing a venue in Italy, get in touch with the team at Paolo Cicognani and we’ll be happy to provide you with some swoon-worthy settings.
Forgetting to hire a destination wedding planner
We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again – planning a destination wedding is by no means an easy feat and the reassurance, knowledge and support of a professional can transform your experience.
