The Tuscan Archipelago is a chain of islands between the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian Seas, west of Tuscany.
History and literature have ensured that most people are familiar with the island of Elba, where Napoleon was kept captive and Montecristo, were the character from Dumas’ well know novel takes its name from.
But the real pearl is the wild mediterranean island of Giannutri, a natural and marine park with dreamlike panoramas and a secret gem: an ancient Roman Villa, immersed in the typical mediterranean vegetation, infused with the aromas of rosemary and broom. Giannutri’s Roman Villa is one of the most scenic archaeological sites of Tuscany, overlooking the sea and with a unique view on the Giglio Island, an astonishingly beautiful landscape only known to experts.
The site of the Roman Villa goes back to the second century AD, and used to belong to the family of the Domitii Enobarbi, descendants of Nero, the Roman Emperor famous for the popular legend claiming that he played the lyre while watching the city of Rome burn, during the great fire of the year 64 AD.
The original building included the rooms of the imperial family, quarters for the slaves, thermal baths and a huge terrace directly accessible from the sea via a staircase. The villa has remained closed for 15 years for safety reasons, but it’s accessible again since June 25, 2015.
The archaeological site will be open to groups up to 25 people, accompanied by specialized guides who will show us also the other Roman remains on the island.
